total wrist fusion

This is performed where patients have disabling pain from whole of wrist arthritis. There can be either post traumatic or inflammatory causes.

This procedure requires a cut in the back of the wrist, opening up all the bones and placing some bone from the hip into the wrist in order to stimulate the bone healing together as one bone. This procedure does not allow wrist range of motion but does improve pain substantially.

Generally, grip strength is around 80% of what is capable on the other side. It does make your wrist feel really stiff, naturally enough.
